About District 7 Jr. Legion Baseball
District 7 established Jr. Legion baseball during the summer of 2016. Thirteen teams joined the league for the inaugural season (Madison, Dawson, Canby, Cottonwood, Minneota, Montevideo, Granite Falls, Kerkhoven, Benson, BOLD, Sacred Heart/MACCRAY, Stewart, and ACGC).
The teams consist of mostly players who have finished 9th and 10th grade. The league was created to increase competitiveness between the small towns of District 7. District 7 was a trailblazer is creating awareness at the state level for the need of a Division II in Jr. Legion. In the Fall of 2016 the Minnesota Legion Baseball Board of Directors voted to establish a Division II in Jr. Legion in the state of Minnesota. With the Division II classification, schools with enrollments of less than 400 students in grades 10-12 are eligible to opt into Division II.
Summer recreation programs are good, but do not offer the competitive nature of this league. In comparison, many of the VFW districts that encompass District 7 have become dominated by the larger cities, in which our smaller cities can no longer compete with. In response to the aforementioned reasons, District 7 Jr. Legion baseball was born in the summer of 2016.
With increased popularity in the region, District 7 added 4 more teams to the Jr. Legion league for 2017 (Morris, Starbuck, New London/Spicer, and Redwood Falls). There are now 17 teams that make up the District 7 Jr. Legion league. For the 2017 season there were 32 teams statewide.
District 7 is also proud to be the host of the 2017 (BOLD), 2018 (Montevideo), & 2020 (Montevideo) Jr. Legion State Tournament. BOLD Jr. Legion will be hosting the tournament in Bird Island August 4-6.
